Movies | Perfect Stranger

I was warned by the BlockBuster guy that he heard awful things about this movie and if I still wanted to rent it. I figured there wasn't anything else to really watch so I rented it anyway. Looks like I just wasted about 2 hours of my life. The dialogue, story and unbelievable plot twists made me queasy. Lesson learned! Easily a 1 out of 10. Don't bother watching this garbage.

Movies | Flushed Away

This movie should have been Flusehd Away. Lame jokes and a lame story. The only highlight are the slug things, which were overused. In any case, 2 out of 5. Very disappointing.

Movies | Shooter

I was first expecting this movie to be a typical Hollywood action flick. I've heard many good things about it, but after watching it I was disappointed. It became all too unbelievable at the end and turned into a typical Hollywood film. I'd give it a 5 out of 10.

Casino Royale

I had high hopes for this to be a break from the typical Bond flicks. I think it tried, but fell short. Lines such as "I need him alive" but continues to chase the bad guy through a dangerous construction area. In any case, I don't want to waste any more time describing my disgust. It could have been so much better. In my opinion, 3 out of 10.

Cars

I had high expectations of this movie which I never thought would let me down. Surprisingly, it turned out to be a big let down for me. The jokes were just not that funny and it's comedic moments mostly fell flat. I'm still really in shock that a Pixar movie could be this average. Going in, I really had no idea that it wouldn't be that good. On a positive note, it did get better in the end. I'm guessing it's because the start and middle portions of the movie were boring, the end didn't have to be all that great to impress. Sad to report, that I'd only give this effort by Pixar a 5 out 10, especially compared to their previous works. Hopefully this isn't a trend for whatever future projects they're working on.

Borat...

When I first heard about this guy and saw the first few minutes of his movie on youtube, I thought he was hilarious. A few weeks later, he's on Conan, Leno and even has a soundboard. To me, having the soundboard shows how popular this guy has gotten. Which prompted me to feel hesitant to watch his movie. He's all over the place and was getting annoying. So going in to watch the movie, I thought I'd just find him annoying. After watching it, I was annoyed the first few minutes, but I eventually found myself laughing so hard at his pranks. It's amazing how he's able to get people to say the stupidest things on camera and how he seems to get away with his character. Now after reading some of the interviews of the people he duped, reminded me how funny the movie was. In conclusion, even if you find yourself annoyed with him, I'm willing to bet you'll be laughing as hard as I was when you finally see his movie. Easily a 9 out of 10. I'm not sure how long the laughs will last in the long run, but I had a good time watching it even though I thought I'd get irritated with his character.

United 93

The one film I could only bring myself to watching at home and I'm glad I waited for it to come out on DVD. United 93 is very well done and really brings out the same (even stronger) emotions from Sept 11, 2001. Going in, I didn't think I'd react as strongly, but was I wrong in a big way. This movie was extremely tough to watch, but I'm glad I forced myself to watch it. It's a well done reminder of how things went terribly wrong that day and gives me an appreciation of life. It still boggles my mind how some people can kill in the name of God. Does not make any sense at all. This movie is a big 10 out of 10. Go see it with someone you love if you haven't yet. We should never forget the innocent people who lost their lives that day.

Movies | The Sentinel

Ugh... Where do I begin? First of all, I didn't have any expectations of this movie, so I don't think I'm biased at all with how I feel about it now. After watching it, I felt that it didn't answer enough questions as to why *slight spoiler alert* the real mole in the Secret Service decided to sell out. Didn't he realize he would put his own family in danger and not just himself? You'd think a real Secret Service agent would know this. Eva Longoria looked good as usual, but her character seemed mainly there so we could laugh at how the men would attempt to flirt with her. She basically seemed like she was only there as a pretty face. I could go on and on with how I thought the characters were just shallow and boring really, but I'd rather not. The movie was slightly entertaining the first 10 minutes, then after that it was all down hill. Just another predictable Hollywood plot. Something I would not recommend at all which I'd give a generous 3 out of 10. It could have been much better if they had tried harder to make it somewhat more believable.

Movies | Red Eye

Synopsis: Terrified of flying, Lisa Reisert (Rachel McAdams) reluctantly hops a red-eye flight bound for Miami and buckles up for a bumpy ride. But her phobia morphs into terror when she learns that a fellow passenger (Cillian Murphy) has plans to murder the deputy secretary of Homeland Security -- and wants to use Lisa as part of the plot. Master of horror Wes Craven directs this psychological thriller set at 30,000 feet.
I had the impression beforehand that this movie was good, but unfortunately it let me down. It's not a really bad movie, it just wasn't as good as I thought it would be. Maybe the scene where (not a spoiler really) where Jack (Cillian Murphy's character) throws Lisa (Rachel McAdams) down the stairs just made my opinion of the movie even worse. It was so obvious that it had cut to a different clip and that it was a stunt double (her hair color was noticeably different). I know, not a big deal really, but I think it is for a big Hollywood flick. In any case, I think the best thing about this movie is Rachel McAdams, what a smile! She reminds me of Elisabeth Shue. I give the movie a 4 out of 10.

Movie Review | Flight of the Phoenix

Synopsis: When a C-119 cargo plane full of oil workers crashes in Mongolia's Gobi Desert during a sandstorm, the survivors attempt to build a new plane from the parts they find in the wreckage. Led by downed pilot Frank Towns (Dennis Quaid), the rag-tag group makes a desperate effort to stay alive and return to civilization. Giovanni Ribisi, Miranda Otto and Hugh Laurie co-star in this remake of the 1960s film that starred James Stewart as Towns.
Going in, I thought this movie was going to be horrible. After seeing it, it wasn't really as bad as the Metacritic Metascores made it out to be. I haven't seen the original either, so maybe most of the reviews were based on comparisons with the original version. In any case, it's a decent action/adventure flick, I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

Crying Out Love, In the Center of the World

Went to see this film at the San Diego Asian Film Festival and I'll admit it, it's one of those movies that blurs my vision for some strange reason. After you see it, read one of the better reviews that I've Googled (don't read the review now as it practically tells the entire story). This film has great performances, great cinematography and has a story that tugs at the heart. Overall, I'd give it an 8.5 out of 10. Now I just have to find a Region 1 DVD of it.

Riddick's Sabre Claws/Knives!!!

Ordered these on eBay and they finally came in! I've probably watched this movie at least a dozen times now and I'm a big fan. Surprisingly, I thought I wouldn't like this movie when I rented it. But after seeing it, I thought it was pretty cool. For the heck of it, I did a search to see if they actually sold anything that was part of the Riddick universe on eBay and they had the knives! Kick ass! They're much bigger than I thought they would be and I guess the only downside to them is they have "China" etched on them on one side. Other than that, if you're a Riddick fan, this is a must buy! It was "only" $8.45, but the shipping charge was $25.00 Still worth it, in my opinion.

Movie Review | Shattered Glass

This fact-based film depicts the rise and fall of disgraced journalist Stephen Glass (Hayden Christensen), who was a staff writer at The New Republic and contributed stories to Rolling Stone and other magazines. Glass fabricated many of his stories, which led to his downfall. Steve Zahn plays the Forbes.com technology reporter who uncovered the truth about Glass's deception. Chloe Sevigny, Hank Azaria and Rosario Dawson also star.
Another surprisingly good movie. Even after reading some of the positive reviews of this movie, I did find it somewhat boring in the beginning. After 30 minutes into the movie, it became much more interesting and I'd highly recommend this to anyone. Easily a 9 out of 10.

Movie Review | Batman Begins
Finally, a Batman movie worth watching since the first one starring Michael Keaton. In fact, I think it's better than that one. This finally shows the true/darker side of the dark knight and has more depth. Gone are the silly, over the top characters. Say hello to realistic people, villains and most of all a real super hero. If you haven't seen it yet, go watch it!

The Motorcycle Diaries
Synopsis: This film tells the incredible true story of a 23-year-old medical student from Argentina, Che Guevara (yes, that Che, played here by Gael Garcia Bernal), who motorcycled across South America with his friend Alberto Granado (Rodrigo de la Serna) in 1951-52. The trek became a personal odyssey that ultimately crystallized the young man's budding revolutionary beliefs. Based on Che's own diaries of the trip.
I heard that this movie was well received by many movie critics and I finally saw it last week. It's subtitled, so it wasn't one of those movies where I could surf on the net while watching it. Overall, I thought it was a good movie but not something I could recommend to everyone. I think it's one of those movies that only some movie goers would like. It's not your typical Hollywood movie at all. I'd give it a 7 out of 10.

Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow

The Village

I'm glad I didn't see this movie until now. I think I may have been slightly disappointed because I would have remembered how M. Night Shyamalan ends his movies with a surprise twist. Having said that, I still think the overall score (44) that Metacritic.com gave it was surprisingly low. I think the expectations were just too high, but the movie was still very good in my opinion. Go see it, it's not as scary as it would seem. 8 out of 10.

Cellular

I've heard that this movie was pretty good and going in I didn't see any trailers for it, so I wasn't even sure who starred in the movie. After watching it, I'm glad I didn't see the trailer because I think it would have given too much away. The movie wasn't too bad considering it had the feel of a straight to DVD release film. Some of the acting was overdone and corny (the lawyer). Although, they probably meant it to be that way, it just felt lame to me. Though, I think the best part of the movie is the extras on the DVD, mainly the documentary on the LAPD Rampart Division/CRASH unit scandal. Make sure to watch that if you rent this flcik. In any case, I'd rate this a 7 out of 10. Not a must see, but not a terrible movie either.

Ju-on

This movie was more confusing to me than it was scary. I was hoping that it'd scare me as much as the Ring did, but this one was a disappointment. Oh well, at least now I know not to bother watching the American remake of it. If anyone knows of a good link that explains the movie, please let me know. Overall, I'd give this movie a 3 out of 5. Not really scarey and the story didn't make much sense.

Probably one of the better, if not the best, comic book character based movie I've seen. It has believable stories and real characters. It occasionally has some cheesy parts, but nothing to really complain about. If you haven't seen this yet, go see it. Easily a 9 out of 10. One of those rare sequels which is better than the original. Something I'd get for sure on DVD as well.

Japanese Story

Synopsis: During a field trip, geologist Sandy (Toni Collette) has the unfortunate luck of being marooned in the Pilbara desert with a man she can't stand. Finding him completely irritating and rather egotistical, Sandy soon learns that his feelings for her are just as contemptuous. The saying that things can only get better doesn't apply to these two, as their increasingly remote location only adds to the already challenging situation
First of all, the synopsis for this movie only touches on a very small part of the movie. In a way, it's a good thing because I didn't know what to expect. Some parts of the story, I couldn't really believe. But overall, I think it was still well done. Toni Collette seems to be a pretty good actress and I think she's pretty much an unknown in the US. Good film to see, especially if you're tired of the typical Hollywood stuff. 7 out of 10.

Troy

Synopsis: In 1193 B.C., Prince Paris of Troy (Orlando Bloom) kidnaps legendary beauty Helen (Diane Kruger) from her husband, King Menelaus of Sparta, setting the two nations on a collision course for war. The Greeks, led by Achilles (Brad Pitt), marshal their entire armada, sail to Troy and begin a decade-long siege. Eric Bana plays Hector, the leader of the Trojan forces, and Sean Bean is the wily Ulysses (of Trojan Horse fame). Positively Homeric!
I had better than average expectations for this movie and I'm sad to report that it didn't live up to it. The battle scenes with Achilles were great, but other than that a lot of the movie bugged me. Weird zoom ins, annoying cut aways to facial expressions, lame musical score and just too much use of CGI. It was still something I am glad to have seen in the big screen, which would have been better if annoying people who talk during the movie would learn how to shut their traps. It's something I'd watch again, just for the battle scenes of Achilles, but I wouldn't buy it on DVD. 5 out of 10.

Man on Fire

Synopsis: Creasy (Denzel Washington) is a former federal agent whose outlook on life is anything but sunny. While in Mexico City, he halfheartedly takes a job protecting the child (Dakota Fanning) of a couple whose lives have just been threatened. Eventually, the little girl begins to grow on Creasy, and the two form a bond that revives his trampled soul. But when she's kidnapped, Creasy's fury is unstoppable as he tries desperately to save her.
I didn't expect to really like this movie. After watching it, I found it to be better than what I had expected. It was a nice surprise to see Christopher Walken in this movie. His acting (mannerisms) style cracks me up. Tony Scott's directorial style, was kind of annoying, especially watching this on the big screen. Other than that and a slightly predictable story, it was fun seeing Denzel exact revenge. Dakota Fanning is a pretty good actress as well. 7 out of 10.

Dirty Pretty Things

Okwe (Chjwetel Ejiofor), an illegal immigrant working as a night porter at a posh London hotel, stumbles across evidence of a bizarre murder. He and Senay (Audrey Tautou), a Turkish chambermaid -- and fellow undocumented worker -- venture into the city's seedy underworld to find out what happened. Stephen Frears directs this gritty urban thriller.
One of those movies that I didn't really know what to expect so I was hesitant to watch it thinking it would bore me. Man do I love being surprised by a great movie and this is one of those kinds of movies. This film is difficult to select a genre for since it does everything so well. Mystery, romance and just plain old reality of how harsh life is for people is done so well. If you want to see an atypical film, where nothing is "Hollywood" about it, go see this. Great story and great performances, IMO. 10 out of 10.

Synopsis: Impish gamine Amélie (Audrey Tautou) lives alone and works in a café. When she finds a trove of toys hidden for 40 years behind a baseboard in her apartment, she's inspired to repatriate the items, an impulse of generosity that sparks more benevolent acts. A celebration of life, Amélie reminds us of the small wonders that abound around us … if only we paused to look.
Just a quick review; it's a french film, it's colorful, it's subtitled but I expected it to be better. It wasn't a really bad movie, it just didn't make me glad that I watched it like "Life is Beautiful". In short, not a bad movie, just nothing special really. Audrey Tautou has amazing eyes though. Four out of Ten.

American Splendor

Synopsis: Harvey Pekar (Paul Giamatti) was a working-class stiff, a file clerk who found an outlet for his creativity by chronicling every minutia of his life in Cleveland, Oh., for more than 20 years in a comic-book series called American Splendor. This revealing biopic co-stars Hope Davis and tells Pekar's story through two-dimensional images, archival footage and more.
This movie had it's funny moments and Paul Giamatti does a pretty good job of impersonating Pekar. After watching this, I'm amazed how different people can be. Overall, the movie was not as funny as I thought it would be, but it was still somewhat entertaining. It seemed to be more of a different style of a documentary/biography with a bit of comedy thrown in. 6 out of 10.

View From the Top

Synopsis: In this romantic comedy, Gwyneth Paltrow is Donna, a suburban California girl with big dreams. All Donna wants is to become a flight attendant and see the world. She hits turbulence when she's met with a catty colleague (Christina Applegate), a frisky pilot (Rob Lowe) and a crazy flight instructor (Mike Myers). But Donna's friend, an "experienced" stewardess (Kelly Preston), shows her the ropes. Mark Ruffalo co-stars.
I expected this movie to be a comedy (I know, I should have read the synopsis first, but I didn't) and it turned out to be more of a romantic comedy than I expected. Even then, the story was predictable, the jokes were pretty lame and I think the best joke was with the whole "emphasis" and "syllable" joke. Surprising how much of a bomb this movie turned out to be considering the cast, in my opinion. 2 out of 10.

Confessions of a Dangerous Mind

Synopsis: Chuck Barris (Sam Rockwell) has it all -- a hot TV hit, "The Gong Show," and the love of a good woman (Drew Barrymore). But he's got one big secret: He's a CIA assassin who kills while purportedly escorting his game show winners on their vacation prizes. George Clooney directs and co-stars with Julia Roberts in this film based on the book of the same name, authored by the real-life Barris.
I'm a fan of Sam Rockwell and I basically think only his acting style saved this movie from me giving it a lower rating. It didn't really hold my attention, was it due to Clooney being the director? In any case, 4 out of 10.

Hellboy

Saw a few of the trailers on TV and I thought it looked kind of dumb really. I saw the reviews given by Ebert and Roeper on TV and Ebert thumbed it up, while Roeper gave it a thumbs down. Then I saw the longer trailer on the horrible movie Once Upon a Time in Mexico (which I've reviewed) and it made me want to watch it. I've read that it's an adaptation from a comic book, so that explains the corny name. After seeing it, with GoBunny Dale, I liked it. Althought, Dale didn't. Hellboy has better lines than Spider-man, I thought. Enough for me to give it a 7 out of 10.

Once Upon a Time in Mexico

Synopsis: The traveling vigilante known as El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) is recruited by a CIA agent (Johnny Depp) to take down a corrupt general allied with a powerful drug lord (Willem Dafoe) who plans to overthrow the president of Mexico. This film is the final chapter of director Robert Rodriguez's trilogy that started with his debut, El Mariachi, and continued with Desperado. Salma Hayek also stars.
I didn't expect to like this movie and my expectations this time were right on. This movie is pretty bad considering how many big names were in it. A friend of mine told me that the action scenes are supposed to be farfetched, but I still couldn't believe that this movie was actually made.
It wasn't all bad though. Depp's character was fun, mainly cause of his acting abilities. Not sure why Iglesias was actually given so many lines, he probably should just stick with singing and riding his dad's coat tail. Who am I kidding, I'm just bitter cause he's serving it up with Kournikova. Anyway, the movie did have some funny parts, but overall was pretty bad. I'm glad I just rented it on Netflix or else I would have felt that I really wasted my money and time. 4 out of 10. I'd maybe give it a 5 if there was more of Salma. Oh well...

Road to Perdition

Synopsis: Hit man Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), known in his 1930s Chicago world as The Angel of Death, is on the run after his wife (Jennifer Jason Leigh) and son are murdered. With his surviving son (Tyler Hoechlin) in tow, Michael sets out to exact brutal vengeance. Complicating matters in this crime actioner are a reporter (Jude Law), Al Capone's enforcer (Stanley Tucci) and other shady characters.
Wow! What a great movie. I wasn't looking forward to watching this one, even after realizing who was in the cast. Now I'm so glad I did because I had no idea how I missed out on this one. Hanks did a great job and Jude Law was great as the loony assassin photographer. Did he lose weight for this role? Anyway, this is one movie I would suggest watching for sure. Great story, great director and just a great movie overall. I am now an official fan of director Sam Mendes. If you haven't seen this movie, go at least rent it. A definite must see and something I will buy on DVD. 10 out of 10.

American Wedding

Synopsis (like we really need one): With high school just a distant memory, Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) are getting married -- in a hurry, since Jim's grandmother is sick and wants to see him walk down the aisle. Meanwhile, Stifler (Seann William Scott) plans the ultimate bachelor party, and Jim's dad (Eugene Levy) is as cool as ever, giving advice that no one wants to hear. (Includes both an extended unrated version and the original theatrical version.)
Same old stuff, same old people. Although, I did notice Tara Reid (damn it!) in this installment and I can't say that I blame her. The guy who plays her boyfriend, Thomas Ian Nicholas, was pretty much regulated to nothingness in the movie. The only scene where I remember him being in was the bachelor party where he was tied up in the closet. I guess he had nothing else better to do. I did watch the unrated version, which I'm not sure I really want to waste my time watching the rated version to compare the two. Overall, the movie had pretty much similar gags as the first two, so it's nothing I'd recommend watching or buying for that matter. 4 out of 10. Oh and Nikki Ziering, those are some fabulous store bought items! I couldn't forget those! Man, did she really marry that guy from 90210?

Pieces of April

Synopsis: A young woman (Katie Holmes) tries to make Thanksgiving dinner for her estranged suburban parents (Oliver Platt and Patricia Clarkson) at her apartment on New York's Lower East Side, while also introducing them to her new boyfriend, Bobby (Derek Luke). Unfortunately, the meal doesn't go exactly the way she hoped it would … beginning with that temperamental oven!
Going into this movie I expected it to be more of a comedy and at the same time I didn't really have high expectations of it, nor did I expect it to be terrible. What did surprise me was that it had an independent movie vibe to it because of the camera work and it turned out to be more of a drama. The camera style didn't distract from the story at all, but it was just something I didn't expect. Overall, I think it did add a sense of realism to the movie. I felt that most of the movie was well done and that sometimes it didn't really explain enough of why her relationship with her parents (particularly with her mother) was so strained. Katie Holmes actually did a good job this time (I'm glad to see her do something not so mainstream) and I didn't really see any hints of her typical mannerisms that she usually displays in her other work. In any case, I'd give this movie a 7.5 out of 10. Something that told a story, but sometimes doesn't really tell enough, which maybe was by design. (Slight spoiler warning) In the end, I'm not sure if just one Thanksgiving dinner will solve all their problems, but I guess it's a start in the right direction.

Matchstick Men

Synopsis: A professional con man (Nicolas Cage) struggling with an obsessive-compulsive disorder meets the daughter (Alison Lohman) he never knew he had, inadvertently jeopardizing his very organized and artificially controlled life. Sam Rockwell plays Cage's partner and protégé in the con man business, and Melora Walters plays Cage's ex-wife. Directed by Ridley Scott and based on Eric Garcia's novel of the same name.
This is my first review, on the K Blog, of the just released DVD "Matchstick Men". It's basically a story about a con man (Nick Cage) who's daughter, that he's never met, is suddenly a part of his life. I won't go into the details to ruin the movie for anyone. Though I went into watching it expecting it to be a pretty good movie, but maybe something that could possibly let me down. After watching it, I'd give it an 8 out of 10. It was a little predictable (damn those not so subtle hints), even though I wasn't trying to figure out the storyline, but in the end it turned out to be a good movie overall. I'd recommend watching it for sure but not something I see myself wanting to watch over and over again.

Netflix

If you're into watching movies, I'd recommend giving Netflix a try (They offer a free 2 week trial). For about $21. a month you can rent up to 3 DVD's at a time, with no late fees and you can keep them for as long as you like. Then when you're done watching them just place them back in the pre-paid envelope and mail it back. It's great to have movies that I actually want to watch whenever I want without rushing to watch them before they are due. I liked the service so much that I'm actually getting rid of my cable. I figure $40. a month for only watching about 4 or 5 channels on an average of 6 hours a month is not worth it. Another cool thing about Netflix, in my experience at least, is that it only takes about 2 days for me to get my next movie on my que (you keep a que of what movies you want on their website). So, for example, if I were to return a movie in the mail on Monday, I usually have the next movie as early as Wednesday or Thursday. I usually try to rent a mainstream movie, an independent film and an anime flick that I have never seen before just to keep it interesting.
