Apple | Typo!

933 GHz.png

Wow. I never knew a 933 GHz G4 existed! This screenshot was taken from Apple's online store for the system requirements for World of Warcraft. Nice to see even the big boys can make a mistake now and then.

Mac OS X | Boot Camp

BootCamp.png

I know this is already possible, but to hear it officially from Apple is another thing. I can just see how this would help people who need to use Windows only software but at the same time turn people off from Windows. They'll see how much greener the grass is on the Mac side. In any case, I'm glad to see Apple supporting this. Time to save up for a Mac Mini!

OS X Software | Saft

Saft Rocks.png

Saft is one of the rare gems in the Mac OS X software world, IMO. It's basically a plug-in for Apple's Safari web browser which adds a lot of useful features. The best part about this piece of software is without a doubt how responsive the developer, Hao Li, is. I was experimenting with Shiira, another Mac OS X web browser, but in my experiece it stil had some issues with some websites. Safari doesn't work well with some websites as well, but overall it does what I want it to do most of the time. The addition of Saft only makes it more worthwhile to use as my main web browser. The one feature that was missing that Shiira had and Safari needed was dated download folders. This would help keep the clutter down from my downloads folder and I thought was the best thing that Shiira offered. A quick email to Hao Li, about 3 weeks ago, regarding this feature for Saft and he promptly replied that it'll be on his to do list. Lo and behold, 2 versions of Saft 3 weeks later he's added it! That's an impressive turnaround time in my book. Bravo Saft and thanks Hao Li for being such a kick ass Mac OS X developer!

C'mon Canon!

DPP Wrong Spelling.png

Even with the latest version of Canon's Digital Photo Professional, they still didn't catch the misspelling of "services" in their menu. C'mon Canon!

New Apple Stuff Day!

iPod_Nano.png

Apple decided to introduce the iPod nano today. My guess is since the iTunes phone doesn't look too impressive, they needed to release something else along with it. The new iTunes looks cool though.

I Just Upgraded To Tiger

TigerUpgrade.png

So far, I'm not too impressed, considering all the hype. Mail 2 looks different, but is still slow for me. IMAP doesn't seem to want to work. Spotlight, seems promising after you index your drives (6 hours later). Dashboard and it's Widgets is just another memory hog, but is rather cool and useful at the same time. Automator, I haven't had a chance to play with, but I don't think I'd use it much. H.264 is nice though. Overall, I'd say Tiger is good, but not great. Oh, and I'm not talking about the lame-o Tiger. Panther users, don't buy in to all the hype just yet. Wait for an update to Tiger or two. Oh, and what is up with Bonjour? I guess that's what happens when you pick a french word like Rendezvous. Anyway, I'd give this Mac OS X Upgrade a 6 out of 10. Nothing worth upgrading to, so far. Unless you're using Winblows of course. If this is you, then you'd absolutely love Tiger.

WeatherPop Advance

SunnyNights.png

Sunny at night? Not sure why it says that, but I guess it's not WeatherPop's fault since it's just showing the info it's receiving from the weather sites. Still, one of the best menu apps out there for Mac OS X, IMO.

Transmit 3 is out, all hail Panic!

My favorite FTP client, Transmit, has just been upgraded to version 3. Luckily for me, I had just purchased a license this year so I qualified for a free upgrade. Even so, these guys probably make the coolest software around and I would have gladly paid for the upgrade. On a side note, check out "The True Story of Audion". For all you old school Mac OS users, this'll bring back some memories. It's a long read, but well worth it.

Mac OS X 10.3.8 Update

10.3.8.png

It just came out today and I just upgraded. Normally I'd wait a few days to see what problems could be introduced with new updates to the OS, but according to VersionTracker it "Addresses an issue with Mac OS X 10.3.7 in which iChat, Mail, or other network-based applications could take a long time to open.". So anything to speed up Apple's Mail, which I use on a daily basis, is a plus in my book. So far, it looks good. *knock on wood*

Lotto Sorcerer

LottoSorcerer.png

Okay, now where did that myth come from that there's not enough software for the Mac OS platform? I mean, if there's lottery prediction software available for it, what could it not have? Kinda pricey at $34.95, but at least it allows you to demo it for 12 uses. Oh, and if you were to win the lottery using it, don't forget where you read about it. *hint, hint*

Skype

skype.png

A cool alternative for people familiar with Mac OS X's iChat audio chat feature. This one will also allow you to talk to PC users and even call mobile or land line phones (for a small charge). Basically, to call regular phones you would need to buy credits but it's free to call from PC to PC. It also has good old text chatting and allows file transfers with no limit on the file size. Probably the best thing for Windows users is that it supposedly contains no adware or spyware. Check it out if you haven't heard of this yet. Thanks to all those at Skype for not forgetting about those of us who prefer to think different.

Canon ImageBrowser

NoisyBoat.jpg

Bravo to Canon for adding more features to their ImageBrowser software suite. The latest version adds the ability to edit movies, add text to them (scrolling or not) and merge sound clips (i.e. MP3's) into movies taken with their digital cameras. Here's a small (1.5MB) sample of what it can do. Simple, but cool stuff. Thanks for the editorial eye and idea for the sound clip, King Dave.

MSN Messenger 4 for Mac

If you rely on MSN Messenger on the Mac like I do, but are really disappointed with the feature set that it has compared to the Windoze version. Sign this petition to hopefully get the MacBU team at MS on the ball with the upcoming version of MSN Messenger for the Mac. For now, I rely on dMSN Messenger.

Mail Scripts 2.1.3

A must have for Mac OS X Mail users. Some of the most useful things that this freeware script allows you to do, in my opinion, is que messages to be delivered at a specific time and date (great for quick reminders) and change the SMTP server that all your accounts use. The latter feature is very handy if you constantly change locations and need to use a different SMTP server to send mail. Along with being freeware that actually is useful, Mail Scripts is rock solid and is a must addition for all Mail users.

Roxio Toast 6 Titanium and verification failed errors.

I've been having problems using Toast 6.0.3 on my PowerBook (running OS 10.3.2) with verification failures of DVD-R's. I've also been having problems with using Impression to backup my iPod. At first I thought maybe my drive was bad, but I was able to use the Finder to burn to a DVD-R with no verification errors. So far, I've tried resetting my PRAM, which usually fixes all kinds of strange things, but not this time. Chime in with a comment if you have any suggestions on how to fix this annoying problem.
